Episcopal Church of Ascension

The Episcopal Church of Ascension

The Episcopal Church of Ascension located on Nicholls and St. Patrick Streets is owned by former Board Member David gissel, and serves as the permanent exhibition space for the GU272  and Ascension Parish: The Jesuit and Episcopal Connection to Slavery'. Curated by museum founder Kathe Hambrick and genealogist Karran Rhoyal, the exhibit features narrative depicted in iconic and sacred imagery by Malaika Favorite.

The exhibit depicts the names of those African families and individuals immorally enslaved by Jesuit priest and sold as commoditiy to two of the most brutal sugar cane planters in Lousiana history. This sale would afford the Jesuit priest the opportunity to continue building one of the most prestigious ivy league academic institutions in U.S. history, Georgetown University.

The church sits on property once owned by Louisiana Governor Henry S. Butler, one of the sugarcane planters who purchased the enslaved Africans.
