The River Road African American Museum hosted its annual MLK Day of Service: Community Volunteer Event, bringing together families, youth, church members, and local residents to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through hands-on service in Donaldsonville.
Observed nationally as a Day of Service, the holiday encourages communities to turn remembrance into action. At RRAAM, volunteers focused primarily on cleaning and restoring the Community Freedom Garden, completing yard work, debris removal, and grounds beautification to prepare the space for continued community use. Additional efforts included general site cleanup to support the museum’s year-round programming and visitor experience.
“MLK Day of Service is about honoring Dr. King’s legacy through action,” said Darryl Hambrick, Executive Director of the River Road African American Museum. “This annual event gives our community an opportunity to serve together and make a meaningful impact.”
In addition to service projects, volunteers were welcomed with free food and music as a thank-you for their time and commitment. The event reflected the museum’s mission of preserving history while strengthening present-day community connections.
RRAAM extends sincere thanks to the more than 100 volunteers who participated and to the organizations that helped make the day possible through food, supplies, and support.
